In late spring to early summer, along with the foliage, a profusion of slightly fragrant, white, bell-shaped flowers with showy yellow stamens bloom and drip, like snowdrops, from strong horizontal side branches. Leaves are finely pointed, ovate, and glossy dark green, which turns a shade of yellow to red in the fall. Bark is a smooth gray, later maturing and shedding its outer layer to reveal an orange inner bark within during winter.
