How Deep to Plant a Tree
Planting depth is the single most important decision you make when putting a new tree in the ground. Get it right and your tree establishes quickly. Get it wrong - too deep being far more common than too shallow - and the tree may decline slowly over months or years before you realize the cause.
The Rule - Root Flare at Grade
Every tree has a root flare - the point at the base of the trunk where the bark widens and transitions into the root system. This flare should sit at or just slightly above the finished soil line after planting. It should never be buried.
When the root flare is underground, the bark stays damp and oxygen cannot reach the roots. Over time this leads to root rot, bark decay, and a tree that slowly loses vigor. The symptoms often look like drought stress or disease, making the cause easy to misdiagnose.

How to Find the Root Flare Before You Dig
Before measuring your hole, find the root flare on your tree. On container-grown trees, the flare is sometimes buried under growing mix. Scrape away the top inch or two of soil around the base of the trunk until you can see where the trunk begins to widen. That is your true starting point.
On fiber pot trees, the flare is usually visible at the top of the pot. The top of the fiber pot - at soil level inside - should sit even with or just above the surrounding grade after the hole is filled.
How to Measure the Right Hole Depth
Once you have found the root flare, measuring is straightforward.
- Set the tree - still in its container or fiber pot - next to the planting hole
- Measure from the bottom of the root ball to the root flare
- That measurement is the maximum depth of your hole
- The hole should be no deeper than this - and it is better to err slightly shallow than too deep
A quick way to check: set a shovel handle or straight stick across the top of the hole. The root flare should be at or just above that line when the tree is placed inside.
How Wide Should the Hole Be
Width matters as much as depth. Dig the hole 2 to 3 times wider than the root ball on all sides. The loosened soil gives roots an easier path outward in the first season. A narrow, bucket-shaped hole forces roots to circle and compete for space.
The sides of the hole should slope gently outward - not straight down. Roughing up the sides with a shovel helps roots penetrate into the surrounding native soil.

Common Depth Mistakes
Planting too deep is by far the most common error. It often happens when the hole is dug to match the full height of the container rather than the height of the root ball to the flare. Always measure the root ball, not the container.
Backfill settling can cause a correctly planted tree to sink over time. To reduce this, firm the backfill in layers as you fill and water each layer to remove air pockets. A slight mound at the surface - an inch or two above grade - helps account for natural settling.
Bowl-shaped planting sites collect water around the trunk, which keeps the root flare wet and invites rot. The finished grade around a newly planted tree should slope gently away from the trunk on all sides.
Fiber Pot Trees - One Extra Step
When planting a fiber pot tree, tear away the top rim of the pot after setting it in the hole. Any fiber material that sits above the soil line acts like a wick, drawing moisture away from the root zone. Remove that top edge before backfilling and your tree will not have to compete with its own packaging for water.
