Northblue Blueberry (Mid Harvest)
Northblue is a cold-hardy half-high blueberry developed by the University of Minnesota for northern gardens. The productive, compact plant bears midseason fruit with large size, dark-blue color, firm texture, and a tart blueberry flavor.
Northblue Blueberry Highlights
- Blueberry type: Half-high hybrid
- Harvest: Midseason; timing varies by region.
- Fruit: Large, dark blue, firm, and tart.
- Plant habit: Compact, typically about 24–36 inches tall and 30–40 inches wide.
- Climate fit: Listed for USDA Zones 3–7 with a 500–1,000-hour chill range.
- Plant: Supplied as one plant in the seasonal dormant-plant program.
Pollination
Plant more than one compatible blueberry cultivar for more effective pollination and improved berry size and yield. Polaris is another cold-hardy half-high cultivar that matures earlier than Northblue.
Planting and Care
Choose full sun and acidic, well-drained soil, ideally around pH 4.5–5.5. Keep the shallow root system evenly moist and mulched. Northblue’s compact habit suits smaller gardens and containers, provided the roots receive winter protection and the potting mix stays acidic.
